The Triund trek is a 2-day easy trek in Dharamshala & Kangra, Himachal Pradesh, reaching a maximum altitude of 2,850 m over about 14 km. It starts from Gallu Devi temple, with pickup in McLeod Ganj. The best time to go is March to June and September to November. Guided departures with Himachali Guide start from ₹2,500 per person.
Triund is probably the most popular short trek in Himachal. From the Gallu Devi temple above Dharamkot a well-made trail climbs through oak and rhododendron forest, past a couple of tea stalls, to an open grassy ridge at about 2,850 metres.
People come for the view. The Dhauladhar stands right in front of you like a wall of rock and snow, and on the other side the ridge drops down to Dharamshala and the Kangra valley, which goes on till the horizon. Sunset and sunrise from the ridge camp are the best part.
It is roughly 7 km each way, so first-time trekkers and families with teenagers manage it fine. We stay the night on the ridge instead of rushing up and down in one day. That way you get the evening light, the stars and the morning view.

Meet in McLeod Ganj at 9 am and walk or drive up to the Gallu Devi temple above Dharamkot. Trek through oak and rhododendron forest and up the final zigzags to the Triund ridge. Evening on the ridge for sunset over the Kangra valley.
Sunrise on the Dhauladhar, breakfast at camp, then walk back down the same trail to Gallu Devi and McLeod Ganj by early afternoon.
It is an easy to moderate climb of about 7 km from Gallu Devi temple, taking three to four hours at a steady pace. The last stretch, often called the 22 curves, is the steepest. Anyone who walks regularly can do it.
Many people walk up and down in a day, but we camp on the ridge overnight so you see sunset and sunrise. That is when Triund looks its best.
March to June and September to November give clear views. July and August bring heavy monsoon rain and slippery trails, and from December to February the ridge can be snowbound and very cold.
Overnight buses run from Delhi and Chandigarh to McLeod Ganj and Dharamshala. The nearest airport is Gaggal (Kangra), about an hour away, and the nearest broad-gauge railhead is Pathankot.
